Building A Professional Website

1. Plan the Design and Content Structure

Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” This is very true when it comes to your website design. If you build a design with minimal thought of the full structure of your website, then you will definitely forget certain items and will need to squeeze them in later wherever they fit. This will throw off the whole design and can lead to user confusion if the content structure is not setup in a coherent manner.

2. Optimize Your Content

After you have determined your content structure, you can review what content you have available already and what you need to create. Any content that is going on your website, especially service and product pages, should be optimized for both users and search engines. Users come to your website looking for answers to their questions and in order to get there the search engines need to determine if there is a high likelihood that your website has the answers to those questions. Beyond answering their questions, you also need to include a clear Call to Action to let the user know what to do next, such as fill out a form, call, sign up, order online, etc.

3. Review the Whole Website

Review, Review, Review! Review everything at least three times. Make sure nothing got skipped and there are no errors. As the saying goes, “dot your i's and cross your t's.” Users will come and go quickly if a website doesn't perform the way they want it to. Nothing can make up for lost leads or sales due to a contact form not sending properly or an order form that doesn't submit or in some cases even misspellings or misused vernacular.

4. Hire A Professional!

Your cousin's friend's neighbor may charge you less for your website, but what happens when she goes off to college across the country or your website crashes at 2am or you want a new feature added to your website that she hasn't done before? Think of your website as your marketing team, that is available 24/7, in every city that your current or potential clients are in. If that's true, don't you want to invest in a website that will look the best and work the best to help you with your business goals? When you want something done right, you hire the pros and get the professional results.
